Ludwig Rosenthal.

Fifty years a bookseller.

In presenting our one hundred and thirtieth catalogue of rare books
and choice manuscripts , we have pleasure in calhng the attention ot the
bookbuying worhl to ourfiftietli anniversary as Ijooksellers. Ludwig Rosenthah
who founded his antiquarian bookstore in 1859, is to-day after fifty years
still at the head of tlie firm that bears his name.

In the last five years we liave found it possible to add largely to our
business facilities. The entrance of Ludwig R-osenthal's sons into the firm,
and the acquisition of acklitional Ijook warehouses (for the storage of our
stock (»f over a million books and ])i"ints) liave enaltled us to deal with a
greater volume of Inisiness.

One word as to tlie present catalogue. There are nine items of which
only one complete copy is known eitliei' including or in addition to our
own, and there; are sixty-nine items of unique interest. A glance through
the catalogue itself will do more t(j explain it than pages of description.

Foho. Calf (modern binding) gilt edges. 1000. —

An important manuscript of great interest. Buridan's commentary is probably
unpublished and occupies pp. 1 — 234. Observations on metereology occupy pp.

PP. 297 — 324 contain the commentary de anima. The colophon reads: ExpUcit
commentum super tres libros de anima MCCO nonagesimo (1390) quinta die Octobris
per mag. Theodoricum et regentem monasterii apud summum. Johannes Buridan
was rector magnificus of the University of Paris in 1320, but left Paris, where he had

6 BACH, Johann Sebastian (1685 — 1750). Continuo accompanyment with
Introduction, Recitatives, Arias, and Chorales, of the Cantata ,, Christ,
unser Herr zum Jordan kam" (Christ, our Lord, to Jordan came). ORI-
GINAL-MANUSCRIPT. From the Library of Herr M. C. A.
Miiller, Bach's successor as Musical Director at St. Thomas' Church, Leipzig,
who presented the score to Herr Sigismund Neukomm. 6 pages. Folio.
Morocco. 6000.—

Most of Bach's original manuscripts are in the Royal Library, BerUn, and
in consequence of this, very few ever come up for sale. On the first page in Bach's
autograph, "Christ, unser Herr zum Jordan kam", "Continuo". A little further
up (in German) in Herr Sigismund Neukomm's autograph," This is the autograph
writing of the great Joh. Seb. Bach. His successor Herr A. C. Miiller gave it to me
as a souvenir of my stay at Leipzig". The manuscript is in perfect preservation
and is a choice specimen of Bach's writing.

UnpubUshed letter of great musical interest. Containing the following particulars
AUes schone an Ihre Frau, an Neate
Smart. In Eil Ihr Beethoven." —

Here follow two and a half pages (in large quarto) of music notes in Beethoven's
autograph throughout, being corrections of mistakes made in the manuscript already
sent by him to London for publication.

9 Beethoven, Ludwig van. Original Musical Manuscript. 4 pp. Folio. 1200.—

The authenticity of this manuscript is proved by S c h i n d 1 e r. "The first
page contains the molto Adagio from the third suite (Canzone de ringraziamento)
of the Quartett in A moll. op. No. 32." Compare also Thayer, Beethoven, 1908
edition Vol. 5. page 266 ff. It is a musical thanksgiving prayer for Beethoven's

renewed health, and an expression of his renewed power of working. Thayer compares
this Adagio with the Adagio of the Ninth Symphony. The three pages that follow
contain "la Danza Tedesca" (Op. 130, Quartett in B-dur) in A in the first recension,
which was afterwards transcribed in B-dur but was destined from the first for the
Quartett in A-Moll. Compare Thayer, as above, p. 293 ff. who quotes the above
manuscript as being in Schindler's possession. At a later date, this work was transcribed
in B-dur. We have here the positive proof for Thayer's statements as we have both
pieces next to one another in our manuscript quoted above. The second piece
is unpublished.

10 Beham, Hans Seb. Biblisoh Historien, Figiirlich furgebildet. Franckf.,
Chr. Egenolff, 1533. The title is surrounded by woodcut
figures. 40 ff. with 81 superb woodcuts. Quarto. Bds. 1500. —

Original edition only known to exist in a few copies. Of. LudwigBosen-
thal's article in the Repertorium fiir Kimstwissenschaft, Vol. V. p. 379 No. 11.
Rosenberg, Beham, only quotes the 1535 edition with 82 woodcuts. P a u 1 i ,
Beham, p. 482 only knows of five copies of this first edition. Extremely scarce.

11 Berlioz, Hector, (the French composer). (1803 — 1869). A remarkable
collection of 41 autograph letters and documents dating from the years
1829—1863. Quarto and octavo. 1400.—

A truly remarkable and full series of letters by the famous composer which
as far as bulk and quality is concerned has never been equalled by any other series
that has come into the market. Some letters cast an interesting light on the com-
poser's tourn^e in Russia, April, 1847, other docimients such aa the original auto-
graph programme of BerUoz's concert at the Gewandthaus, Leipzig, December 10 1853
are quite unique.

Each of these Bible parts is complete in itself, so that we have here the complete
Bible. An additional interest is given to this copy by the twenty-eight curious and
cleverly painted miniatures by a Gernian Master of the fifteenth century which
are to be found painted in the first part of the Volume. The first leaf for instance
has a fine miniature of a knight surrounded by eighteen various colored arms. The
other miniatures, which are generally joined to the initials and spread over the whole
of the page represent flowers, courtly dames, and gentlemen, fruits, animals,
the Imperial, and the Bavarian arms. The first as well as the second
part of the Bible are quite complete.

From the Esterhazy Castle Library recently bought by us in its entirety.

considered this book to be an Bichstadt Breviary, in error. This book is so rare that
Hain only knew the Pars aestivalis. Proctor 32.55 attributed the book to "Georgius

de Spira", and states that the book was not printed at Begensburg, but sent there
only (Cf. the declaration of the Bishop of Begensburg). Perhaps Georgius de Spira
is identical with George Beyser, printer at Wurzburg. Each of the volumes has
afine large woodcut, St Wolfgang kneeUng before a holy apparition, and
behind stands St Peter. One of these woodcuts is colored. Very fine copy with full
margins.

Quite unknown to bibliographers and probably the only copy known. This
is a breviary for the use of the Benedictine Convent of St Mary at Soissons. Very
fine copy "r6gl6" in a remarkable binding executed for Henry III
of Prance. Black morocco, \vith the emblems of the Passion gilt on the front and
back boards: in all four corners and on the back the famous skull (death's head)
edges gilt and clasps. A most curious binding such as was usually made for the King
of Fi'ance after he had instituted the Order of the Wliite Penitents.

Exceedingly rare, both because it is the product of a rare press, and because
of its Uturgical interest. The types are identical with those nimibered Nos 3 and 4
by Falk in his "Die Presse zu Marienthal im Bheingau und ihre Erzeugnisse". The
volume has no signatures, and no pages are numbered. For these reasons it certainly
belongs to the oldest products of this press. See Falk's article on this book in the

The world map of Domenico de Rossi (de Rubeis) dated 1695, of which the
whole of the gores or 24 sheets are offered for sale as above, engraved by the
Strassburg artist, Matthias Greuter iii Rome, is totally undescribed and unknown.
None of the works consulted for the description of the first edition of the map
No 62 of thi^ catalogue mentioned this third edition. In the delineation of Australia,
the continent is already shown under the name "Nova Ollanda", as well as the
coasts of New Guinea and many of the Polynesian islands. In the American con-
tinent the discoveries of Magalhans, Drake, Lemaire, Schouten, Davis and Hudson
are well indicated. The province of New York is stiU called Nieu Nederland and
California is still shown as an island.

Gutenberg, circa 1450. 30 U. PRENTED ON VELLTOI. Folio. 5000.—

Ttvo leaves only of a totally unknown edition of a thirty-liue Donatus

there is a copy of the corresponding leaves of another edition but with the
same type. See Veroffentlichungen der Gutenberggesell-
schaft I. Zedler, Die alteste Gutenbergtype, p. 41 foil. (Plate 9 and 10 of
the Facsimiles). Through the above copy we can confirm Zedler's theory that
the London fragments form part of a thirty line edition and not part of a 27 line
as thought by Hessels and by Proctor. The tiiirty hne Oxford fragments, though
printed with the same types as the above, are taken from another edition, as may
be easily seen if the reproductions are consulted which form part of Veroffent-
lichungen der Gutenberggesellschaft, II. Schwenke, Die
Donat- und Kalender-Type, Plate VI, P. 2 b. (last four lines). The conclusion
results that the abore is the only complete leaf knoTra to exist of a thirty-line
Donatus, of an edition which has remained totally unknown.

The above Donatus measures 280 mm in height and 192 mm in breadth.
The type-face (without margin being included) measures 242 mm in height and the
lines are 160 to 170 mm in length. We have to thank Professor Dr. Schwenke,
Director of the Royal Library, Berlin, for the information that our Donatus is
older than the Oxford Fragment, because of the irregularity of the line-endings
which proves the early age of this Donatus. The above is therefore not only the
oldest but also the most complete thirty-line Donatus known. We woxild call

attention to the fact that the large initials are painted in red by hand, and that,
in a similar way to the Ludwig Rosenthal Missale Speeiale (No. 65 of this
catalogue) several letters which did not take the printer's ink sufficiently well,
have been inked in, a new corroboration of the early date of the Missale Speeiale.

Without Place, Name of Printer, or Year, (Mainz, Joliann Gutenberg,
before or ca. 1450). 176 ff. 1811. Folio. Original stamped pigskin binding
with fittings and bosses.

Gntenbergr's first printed book, hitherto absolutely unknown. A unique
item of unbounded typographical interest dating from the cradle of the Printer's
Art.

The first leaf begins as quoted above, Sequitur registrum. The third,
Secuntur misse speciales. 173 ft. follow of which one is blank, so that in all there
are 176 leaves in the book. There are 14 leaves wanting, of which however
several were blank. It is however very difficult to state exactly where leaves
are missing and which were blank, as there are no signatures, no numbers on the
pages, and no catchwords. The pages are however numbered in an old hand,
though with many errors.

The Missal has on the lower margin water-spots throughout and shows some
fingermarks occasionally. However, considering that we have before us one of the
first productions of the printer's press, the condition of the volume does not leave
much to be desired. This unique volume has been the object of searching enquiries
and study during the last few years. Up till a short time ago, the opinion sustained
by Misset, Professor Hupp, Henri Stein, that the above was a trial book of Guten-
berg's was confronted by another opinion supported by Adolf Schmidt and Pro-
fessor Schwenke, that the book is the work of an unknown printer dating from
1470. Although the last-named authorities were only able to oppose doubts, without
any background of facts to the probabilities that testified to an early date, it is
only through the discovery of a second book in a similar typographical condition
that the Gutenberg theory has been maintained on a solid foundation. This book
is a Missale abbreviatum, from the Library of St. Blasien, containing only 72 leaves
(the last two are blank) that has turned out to be an extract from the Missale
Speeiale we are offering for sale, with but slight differences in some sections
of the text, and which is contemporary, as is proved by whole lines printed from
the same type as ours. This Missale Abbreviatum, which is now in the Library
of the Benedictine Monastery of St Paul in Carinthia is a complete work in itself and
contains the Canon woodcut of the Crucifixion which is wanting in our Missale
Speeiale. This woodcut is dated 1450 by such experts, as W. N. Schrei-
b e r , W. Schmidt, etc., who are absolutely authoritative. Professor Hupp has
in addition been able to obtain further typological proofs from the St. Paul Missal
for the early age of both missals, so that by now the controversy may be considered
as at an end. The following books which have made the Missal the object of dis-
cussion may be obtained from us.

written calligraphicall}' in Spain in the fifteenth century in red and black
in Latin and Spanish. The book is ornamented with twenty-seven splendid
full page miniatures, surrounded by beautiful borders, with fruit, flowers,
birds, insects, and precious stones to make them Uveher. Many pages
have in addition a charmingly designed border surrounding the text.
In addition there are eleven smaller miniatui'es, 17 borders round the
text, and an enormous number of large and small letters, initials, etc. on
backgrounds of different colors, blue, red, etc. heightened with gold. 301 ff.
Calf (romantic binding) gilt extra, g. e. 15000.-

This superb miniature manuscript contains splendid miniatures both of
the Spanish and of the Flemish schools. Spanish mmiatures are well known to
be exceedingly rare. This manuscript seems to have belonged to the Ayalas, a
Spanish Noble family, whose arms, (a bu-d's wing) are to be found on many of
the miniatures, and whose colors (a charming blue) have often proved the motive
\inderlying the color scheme. This manuscript has undoubtedly been specially
painted for the Vicount Joseph de Ayala (or an ancestor of his) whose autograph
signature we find on the first leaf. What renders this manuscript especially
remarkable is that the miniatures all of which have been an original part of the
book are divided into two schools, a Spanish type, and a Flemish tj^pe. The
manuscript has at the beginning a twelve page calendar, and has the Ayala sig-
nature on page 1. The Ayala arms are repeated fourteen times on the miniatures,
sometimes even several times on the same miniature. The miniatures represent;

1. The Dedication of the Virgin in the Temple (Spanish school).

2. Full page border, with two small miniatures, the Ascension and the
Resurrection (Spanish school).

3. The Annunciation (Spanish school).

4. Full pa^e border with large mitial (Spanish school).

Some of the miniatures especially Nos 1, 3, 9, 14, 21 have some parts of
the page cut out by idle hands. Some of the miniatures are superb
paintings both as regards execution and composition, as
well those of the Flemish school as of the Spanish type. Some of the miniatures
have especially beautiful landscap'es.

90 Missale notatum contin. Graduale, Sequentiarium. Canon. Collectarium ad
usum dioecesis Salisburgensis. Interesting twelfth century vellum manuscript
dating from about 1170 written calligraphically in red and black. 218 ff.,

and ornamented initials. Quarto. Pigskin.

This manuscript is an Antiphonary and Sacramentary for the use of a
church in the diocese of Salzburg. The calendar ressembles exactly that of Saint
Peter's in Salzburg, see Anton Pechner, Mittelalterliche Kirchenfeste and Kalen-
darien in Bayern, Freiburg, 1891, pp. 127 — 160. According to a note on f. 7 the
volume belonged to "ecclessiae beatae Mariae in Sistorf", that is Sebersdorf, a

An interesting Flemish manuscript dating from the beginning of the fourteenth

liturgy as is seen by the prayers to be found within the volume.

The following note referring to Australia indicates why Australia was less
patronised by explorers than other countries, „Weill Amerika lohnender und naher
fiir die Bntdeckung sei". The following notes on the West Coast of Australia
are of great interest:

„Landt van de Eendracht ist anno 1616 in dem Octobri entdeclit worden von einem
Hoilandischen Admiral Theodoro Hartogio mit dem SohifT Concordia Oder EIndracht genant.
Daher es aucti T'Landt van de Eendracht genant worden. Ist hiernach Anno 1622 welter

Anno eodem ist auch erfunden worden die Gegende de Leuwine genant. Anno 1628 In

Important contemporary Document for the History of Dutch Exploration in
Australia. See Collinbridge, Discovery of Australia, pp. 261 — 275.

Under one map is an inscription dedicating the two maps to one Johann
Jakob Gontzenbach, merchant, in which the author's initials are given as M. A. F. B.
These maps are as important for American geographical history as for the exploration
of Australia.

of the globes of the time. The globe is supported on a fine and contemporary
stand. The name of Neroni is but very little known and we have only found it
under a map of the Chinese Empire in Sanson's Atlas. A splendid ornament to

and is of great interest for the history of American geography. The globe is moimted
on a contemporary stand and is a splendid ornamental specimen of the old world
globes, that are now so rare, nearly all the available specimens being in ptiblic

113 Poenitentiale. Eruditorum penitentiale cuilibet christiano necessarium. S.
1. a. et typ. (Angouleme, Petrus Alanus & Andreas Caliurius, 1488.) With
17 splendid coloredwoodcuts. Goth. 76 ff. 25 11. Quarto.

Red morocco, g. e. by Derome. 6000.—

H a i n 13152. Proctor 8793. Splendid copy of an exceedingly rare book.

114 Portulan. Anonymous portulan or sea-chart (50 : 20 cm) on vellum mounted
to roll upon a wooden roller containing charmingly colored and well
executed details of the coasts of Africa, Asia and Europe and especially
of the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Biscay. This charming specimen
was certainly executed in Italy for the use of merchant seafarers at the
commencement of the 16th century. It is fully described in "Studii bio-
grafici e bibhografici sulla storia della geografia in Itaha" by G. Uzielli
and P. Amat di S. Fihppo (2d ed.) Rome 1882. Vol. II, though some
mistakes are there made. The portulan belonged to the Marchioness
Gerdano de Colloredo (Melz)in Udine. 1500. —

These portulans are not only of great interest for the history of the state
of geographical discovery in Europe in the 16th century but are of great human
interest as showing us on what the mariners and merchant of the Middle Ages
relied on to buffet the storm and dangers of the sea.

115 Portulan. Domenech, Amaldo. A very interesting Catalonian chart (61 : 38)
of distances between the various centres of commerce in Em'ope,
Asia, and Africa dated 1484 and executed by "mi Arnaldo Do-
menech disipulo petri Rosellann o", on which the chief
towns are figured with towers etc. and the arms of the countries in which
they are situated. The following towns etc. are figured; England, Mont-
pelher, Perpinya, Tortoza, Valencia, Sevilla, Alexandria, Bruges, Avignon,
Matela, Genua, Toulouse, Sardinia, Piza, Barcelona, Sicihj, Naples, Majorca,
Tunis, Venice, Constantinople, Rhodes, Crete, Acre, Damascus, Beirut,
Cyprus. This chart represents a type of the greatest rarity of which very

few are known. 1500. —

116 (Portulan.) Oliva, John, of Livorno. 1530 Portulan or sea-chart, (SU/^
: 49 cm) painted on vellum in colors of the coasts of Europe, Africa and
Asia, and especially the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. This charming
specimen of a portulan was executed by one of the famous Oliva family,

so well known to cartographers. 2000. —

This portulan is both dated and signed, a double virtue which is not found
frequently. At the top is a miniat\u?e of Jesus on the cross. An interesting point
about this sea-chart is that the island of Malta as weU as the island of Rhodes
bears the arms of the Knights of St. John in spite of the fact that the Knights of
St. John had lost the island of Rhodes already in the year 1522. Not known or
mentioned by UzieUi and by P. Amat di S. Fihppo.

117 (Portulan.) Scotti, Giacomo of Genoa. Eight very interesting vellum portu-
lans, being charts of the sea-coasts of the British Isles and of the Mediter-
ranean Sea,, painted in colors with' the names of the principal towns.

Ca. 1510. Bound in quarto shape. Red velvet binding. 3000.—

Not known to UzieUi, and P. Amat di S. Filippo.

133 Sibylla. Vaticinia sibyllina sive papista. Latin fourteenth century manu-

Fol. 43 b by another hand): Anno domini Millesimo cccxlvi facta est quedam visio
in Olaustro Cisterciensis oridins. Fol. 44 b. vigiUate ergo. This exceedingly curious
latin manuscript contains the story, the Ufe and the prophecies of the Tiburtine
SibyU relating to the Papacy and its Future. The well known dream of the two
senators (during the reign of the Emperor Augustus) is also mentioned in this manu-
script which deals with the prophecies on the Papacy in greater detail. The pope
is figured in the miniatures with monks, and in the company of grotesque animals,
dogs, angels etc. On the last page is a letter from Magister Johannes de Davidis
Toletanus containing prophecies for the year 1349. After the description of the
miniatures the text is occupied with prophecies on the Empire of Byzance, about
the universal chaos, about the world's condition till a new Pope should reorganize
the world. The miniatiores are interesting not only on account of the colors employed
and on the composition of the pictures , but also because of the persons repre-
sented, which are indicative of a period of primitive art. The composition, the
architecture, the expression of the faces, the costumes are all indicative of a distin-
guished artist, probably a South German. Paracelsus' book "P aracelsus,
Auslegung der Figuren, so zu Nurnberg gefunden seindt worden" published at
Basel, 1591 pp. 1591 foil, has some ressemblances to the figures in the manu-
script we offer for sale. Paracelsus' work has been reproduced in Johannes,
,,Prophezeiungen der beruhmtesten Propheten und Seher iiber das Papsttum und
die Jesuiten", Vienna 1848 p. 15.

jManuscript on vellum in German verse of the tliird qnarter of the XlVth

leather (modern). 8000.—

This precious Mimuscript of the Lower Rhine agrees with the copy of the
Jena University Library and that belonging to the grand Duke of Baden: and
seemingly was the model from which the latter was formed. In the same way as
the langviage is of the Lower Rhine, so do the miniatures point to Cologne. The
scenes representing profane and biblical Wstory are cleverly colored ajid the figures
in them skilfully grouped. It is possible that the artist copied these from an
old master of the 13th centnry. Under each miniature is an explajiation in red
ink. Tills manuscript which resembles the two mentioned above in contents, diffe-
ring only in the dialect employed, is incomplete with them. Starting with the
second part of the 9th chapter, it finishes with the second part of tho thirty-third
chapter. In adition 1 leaf forming the end of chapter 30 and beginning of 31 is
missing. The MS. was for many years in the possession of Karl Simrock who
doubtless had the intention of publishing it. Cf. P o p p e , t)ber d. Specvilum
humanae salvationis u. e. mitteldeutsche Bearbeitung desselben (that of the grand
Duke of Baden) Berlin 1887. We add a copy of this book to the MS.

130 Spohr, Tx)uis. Collection of sixty-seven original autograph letters. (A great
many of them are very full and occupy some three or four pages) written
during the years 1807 to 1859. Foho and quarto. 1250.—

A 'ollo' tion of letters by Spohr of such quality and quantity from his earliest
days to the year of his death has never been equalled and will certainly never be
offered for sale agahi. A full description of these letters will be sent on ap-
pUcation if required. Very important tor the history of the Opera in Germany,
during the nineteenth century.

137 Struyk, N. Verschyden Insecten getokent naat leeven. Two hundred and
eighty eight plates with over thirteen hundred drawings in colors drawn
after nature with exceeding care by N. Struyk of beetles, wasps, flies,
butterfhes, and often Avith the various stages of evolution as caterpillars
and puppae, etc. and generally represented with the flowers and animals
on which the insects live. Some plates have been added showing insect-
eating birds. The whole are carefully mounted and contained in six volumes.

(Ca. 1750.) Large folio. In six cases. 3000.—

In splendid condition. I can find nothing of tho artist in any biblio-
graphical helps at my disposal. Tho work is of an extremely artistic nature and
all the Insects etc. have been drawai with an exact fidelity to nature distinctive
of Dutch miniature painting. The coloring is beautiful and the work would be the
pride of any Natural History Museum or Society that would possess it. The col-
lection reaUy requires seeing in order to appreciate it fully.

notation. 22 ff. Red morocco. 1000. —

This little anonymous manuscript has not been identified in spite of the
efforts of musical authorities in Bruxelles and Paris to discover its author. The
manuscript is quite chaming owing to its legible caUigraphy and its delicious orna-
mentation. It opens with a history of music, and the essential fomidation of
song, and forms a complete Manual of Plain Chant. At the end is an annotated
Gloria in BxcelsLs. The manuscript begins "Musica secundum Bootuim est scientia

has a border with four women below it. Then follow 29 ff. printed on both sides

mounted on a skilfully worked bronze base. The maker's name is R o b e r t

The globe shows';|the results of Giov. Verrazzano's discoveries, and the
division inlmeridians from 10 to lO" and contains the Equator, Tropics
and Polar circles. America bears the name "America" and "Mondus novus",
and is divided into four parts: North, Central, South America and the
Archipelago. The following names of American towns, rivers etc. occur.

The Continent lying opposite the southermnost point of America is called
Brasielie regio. The most interesting characteristic of the globe
is the fact that the results of Verrazzano's travels are marked by "terra
Verrazzana." Except on the maps of Girolamo Verrazzano (Giovanni's
brother) of 1529, the name is nowhere found.

In any case this globe dated 1530 in two places, is the earhest to show
Verrazzano's discoveries. An earher cartographic mention of these dis-
coveries is only to be found on Vesconto di Maggiolo's Map (1527) and that
of Girolamo Verrazzano (1529). — A skiKully worked bronze foQt in imi-
tation of a contemporary model has been added to tliis most important
contribution to the history of the early discoveries of America. 30000. —

184. Warner, Rich. Die Hoohzelt, Original autograph score. 1833.

This is the original manuscript of Bichard Wagner's first Opera, never per-
formed, and unpuhlished.

During Wagner's stay in Prague, the idea of this Opera was first sketched
out. In his autobiography wo find the following details as to the work. "After
a wedding the bridegroom's friend who is madly in love with his friend's bride
has a furious struggle with the bride who is left temporarily alone and after a wild
scene of madness is thrown into the courtyard. At the funeral, the bride falls

lifeless on the dead body of her husband's late friend. Returning to Leipzig, I
composed the first number of the opera and the important sextett in it charmed
Weinling very much. However it did not please my sister and so I destroyed it
later on." In spite of this assertion, the opera was not entirely destroyed for future
generations. Wagner had carefully copied out his composition from his rough
notes and had presented it to the Musical Society of Wiirzburg (Musikverein) of
which he was then conductor. On the wrapper of the opera we find the fol-
lowing "Lit. D. No. 30. Chor und Septetto von Richard Wagner. Vereinseigen-
thum." In addition thre are some 4 Bavarian duty-stamps, cancelled with the
rubber stamp of the lawyer Dr. Steidle of Wiirzburg, 1 — 3 — 33. On the second
leaf is the title in Wagner's own hand. "Fragment einer unvoUendeten Oper:
Die Hochzeit von Richard Wagner. Dem Wurzburger Musikverein zum Andenken
verehrt. Introduktion; Chor und Septett." The last page of the ms is signed,
'Wurzburg, den Isten Marz, 1833, Richard Wagner". The ms passed into the hands
of an amateur as soon as the Musikverein of Wiirzburg ceased to exist, in spite
of the efforts made by Wagner to recover posession, including an expensive lawsuit
in which he was mulcted in costs. From the possession of the amateur the ms
passed into our hands.

The music of the Wedding, the first opera of Wagner written at the age
of 20, bears already traces of that genius which we find reflected in Tristan and
in Lohengrin. Distinct anticipations of some of Elsa's and Tristan's music is to
be found in the manuscript. The state of the ms. leaves nothing to be desired, and,
as all know Wagner's beautiful musical hand, is a feast for the eyes.

of arms, measuring 29 by 42 cm. FoHo. VeUum. 3000. —

A superb heraldic manuscript of the Austrian family of Hiitter von Hiitters-
dorf. The foUo coats of arms are superb. We have rarely seen such finely executed
heraldic drawings. The manuscript has some spots and water-stains.

158 [Wappencodex.] Gymnich, Johann von, Kaiserlicher Hofgraf u. Reichs-
Ehrenherold. Wappenbuch des deutschen Adels. Arms of the German
Nobihty. German manuscript on paper dated 1630. 249 ff. (of which 23 ff.
form the index and no less than 226 are fully covered with crests and
arms). With many hundreds of colored coats of arms,
several being in folio. Folio. Sd. 2000. —

The author seems to have belonged to the Rhme Gymnich famUy which
came to an end in the eighteenth century. The volimie we offer for sale appears
to be an original work of the author, and has his signature and his own arms
drawn and colored by himself on the inside of the bmding. The manuscript has
the advantage of a very full index.

cause the name of the author is mentioned on the calendar itself as Hans Rulman

dustries practised during the twelve months of the year. The two leaves are
